In response to a lawsuit filed in January by the AFL-CIO and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, the Department of Labor promises that by November OSHA will issue a final rule on its proposed employer-payment-for-PPE standard.

- EPA sued over million farm kids exposed to pesticides - SAN FRANCISCO, California, June 8, 2005 (ENS): A coalition of farm workers, environmental and public health groups filed suit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tuesday, charging the agency with ignoring the special risk to children growing up surrounded by chemical poisons on farms. Dept. of Pesticide Regulation sued for failing to comply with Toxic Air Contaminant (TAC) law - SACRAMENTO, CA (01/21/05) -- The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) has been sued by a coalition of environmental health and community groups to force the DPR to comply with the state's Toxic Air Contaminant (TAC) law. The law, enacted in 1984, requires DPR to assess all pesticides as potential air contaminants and regulate them in order to protect public health. Click here for more information.

- Click here for an online training on the recognition, management, and reporting of pesticide-related illness. This program is intended for medical professionals, but anyone can use the training. (When the system prompts you for an "Administration Number," enter 0 to proceed.) This 60 minute course gives an overview of the regulatory definition of pests, pesticides and their uses; gives some guidelines on how to recognize, diagnose and manage commonly encountered pesticide illnesses and scenarios; presents other types of pesticides and their use; and presents reporting requirements for medical providers and their staff.

- Program to Screen Former Lab Workers - March 23, 2007 - Betsy Mason - Contra Costa Times - Former employees of Lawrence Livermore and Sandia/California National laboratories are eligible for free medical screening to determine if they have any health problems related to work-related exposure to radiation, asbestos, beryllium, silica, lead, lasers or other toxins. Experts from UC San Francisco and Boston University will start evaluating workers near the end of April.

- Silicosis - Working with Cement Roofing Tiles: A Silica Hazard DHHS (NIOSH) Pub. No. 2006-110
This NIOSH educational brochure describes measures that can be taken to reduce roofers? exposure to silica dust, including steps for implementing a respirator program. NIOSH has measured respirable silica levels up to four times the recommended exposure limit around roofers cutting cement products, such as when roofing tiles are cut during the installation process.

- An Investigation of Health Hazards on a New Construction Project - Scott Schneider and Pam Susie - Occupational Health Foundation - April 1993 - Focusing on a construction project in the Washington, DC area, this report identifies all chemicals scheduled for use and documents exposures in order to determine the full range and magnitiude of potential exposures. In addition to chemical exposures, the report measures noise exposures and identifes potential ergonomic hazards for further investigation and intervention.
- Exposures to Quartz, Diesel, Dust, and Welding Fumes During Heavy and Highway Construction - Susan R. Woskie et al. - AIHA Journal - Personal samples for exposure to dust, diesel exhaust, quartz, and welding fumes were collected on heavy and highway construction workers. The respirable, thoracic, and inhalable fractions of dust and quartz exposures exceeded recommended exposure limits.
