In the early 1900s, women worldwide protested the harsh working conditions in sex-segregated jobs including garment and domestic work. Facing political, economic and social inequalities, women staged strikes and rallies to demand better pay, safer workplaces and an end to discrimination on the job. Now, nearly 100 years later, women in the United States have made important advances. However, significant challenges remain. Far too many women remain exposed to unsafe working conditions and particularly to chemicals known to cause a variety of health problems.
