Remember Those Who Died Working!
Every year, more than 60,000 people in the United States die from preventable diseases caused by exposure to chemicals and other agents in the workplace; about 7,000 of these individuals are Californians. Of the 900,000 people who are diagnosed with an occupational disease each year, 135,000 live and work in California. Workers in the state of California face not only a growing danger on the job but also attacks on worker's comp rights and protections and, even more workers are killed or fatality injured due to negligence by employers and thousands more workers are being seriously injured due to stress on the job, poor ergonomics and other safety conditions. STOP THIS "TERMINATION" OF WORKERS!
Brothers and Sisters, who climb poles we morn the loss of our brother William McFadden. He died because he came in contact with a high voltage power line while on loan to Redding California. While the investigation is not yet completed, the CWA local 9410 Safety Committee and your Union Officers at both the Local and National level are personally involved in the investigation. We are not waiting for the completion of the investigation to recommend and arrange assistance for you who climb. The IBEW local 1245 has sent a Representative to our safety committee meeting on January 22, 2004 and has volunteered to help us with your concerns. He gave us and you a telephone number to call 1-415-695-7500, which is PG & E, to check out any situations where you believe it is dangerous. The IBEW Representative cautioned us to visually inspect any pole you climb before you attempt to climb. Look for excessive strain, unevenly drooping power lines; or lines, which do not look evenly balanced between all three connectors having the same amount of sag between poles. IBEW and PG&E are willing to give training and that is being discussed with SBC. In the past, PG& E and IBEW have given training on Gas testing and other Safety Training on electricity. We thank our Brothers in the IBEW for their quick response to our call for help; yet that is what it means to be a Union brother or sister. We are all members of a union family and we help each other "An injury to one is the concern of all" has been the motto of the labor movement for over a hundred years.
