Summary on Workers Memorial Day 2006 Event

On Friday April 28 the Workers Memorial Day 2006 Commemoration took place at the UCLA Downtown Labor Center, and was a great success! Nineteen organizations participated in the Resource Tables portion, bringing a wealth of material on environmental health, health services, immigrant workers, local health & safety campaigns, policy & legislation, occupational health, repetitive stress injuries & support and workers compensation.

Attendees had the opportunity to browse the Resource Tables, collect information, and speak to advocates prior to the program. At the front of the venue, a poster project by Amanda Romero, UCLA-LOSH intern, was displayed detailing worker fatalities in California collected through media coverage. Accompanying this display was a slideshow of news headlines of worker deaths in California since April 28, 2005. The event included a ?Memorial for Workers? that invited people to write names of workers they know who have suffered injuries or fatalities.

Charles Burks, President of SoCalCOSH opened the program by giving background on the organization. Linda Delp, UCLA-LOSH and Victor Narro, UCLA Labor Center co-facilitated the program. Kent Wong, UCLA Labor Center, welcomed everyone to the Labor Center space and tied in Workers Memorial Day with the events of May 1, International Workers Day. Field Representatives, Josh Englander and Oscar Garcia, gave support for the event speaking on the behalf the politicians they represent, Assemblymember Paul Koretz and U.S. Congressman Brad Sherman, respectively. Later, Kent Wong introduced Maria Elena Durazo, Interim Secretary-Treasurer, Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, who spoke about immigrant workers, workplace injuries and the need to collectively work together continually to see change.

Linda Delp then gave statistics on worker fatalities, including the fact that immigrants, and more specifically Latinos, suffer more workplace injuries and fatalities. In a moment of silence, participants paid respect to workers who have suffered fatal injuries since 2005, and for Mario Vasquez, 25, who died on April 10, 2006 at the Conoco Phillips refinery in Wilmington, when a storage tank roof collapsed during repair.

The program then focused on strategies being used by local organizations to prevent / reduce workplace injuries. Rosalba Mata, UNITE-HERE Local 11 worker-organizer, spoke about the hotel room cleaners? campaign and common injuries they face. Barbara Owens, RN and member of United Nurses Assoc. of California/Union of Health Care Professionals - AFSCME, spoke on the labor-management partnership program being used at Kaiser Hospitals to prevent back injuries common with nurses.

Victor Narro then gave background on the next two organizations with whom he has worked. Jacinto Lopez, Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance (KIWA), gave background on the organization and shared details of the Latino and Korean market workers organizing campaign taking place in Koreatown. Lastly, Efraín Martinez, representing the California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. and also a farm worker, spoke about health and safety conditions farm workers and immigrant workers face.

The program closed after inviting any attendees to share other health and safety campaigns and issues.

SoCalCOSH and UCLA-LOSH would like to thank everyone for attending and helping to make the annual event successful!

Notes from the SoCalCOSH meeting of November 18, 2005

The SoCalCOSH Quarterly meeting on November 18th was well attended! The agenda included two topics: Emergency Preparedness and the pending Cal/OSHA Heat Stress Standard.

Emergency Preparedness
Steven Yao, Arroyo Vista Family Health Center, and a trainer for the Disaster Resource Center of LA County, brought great resources to help people get prepared for a workplace emergency. His presentation included what is a disaster, how to prepare, how to respond, and disaster response regionally in California. Suzan Luu, Coordinator of SoCalCOSH, shared a disaster kit for an individual that includes a first aid kit and other supplies for use during an emergency. This kit was put together by Bill Hatch, retired firefighter and Hazmat Project Director at UCLA-LOSH.

Cal/OSHA Heat Stress Standard
Fran Schreiberg of WORKSAFE! gave an overview of how a Cal/OSHA Standard gets passed and the background on the pending Heat Stress Standard. The Heat Stress Standard is still in the discussion phase within the Cal/OSHA Standards Board. She is working on collecting worker testimonies on an on-going basis for use in the near future when Cal/OSHA will hold public hearings regarding the Standard. Scott Goodell, organizer with UNITE-HERE Local 52, gave testimony about working conditions union members experience at a K-Mart distribution plant in Riverside. Scott's presentation supports the point worker advocates are making - the Standard needs to cover indoor work environments as well as outdoor. Currently, the proposed Standard only includes provisions for outdoor heat stress. Workers at the K-Mart distribution plant work in a warehouse that often reaches temperatures of 130 degrees.

Stay tuned for more information and collective action to get the Heat Stress Standard passed to protect all workers!

Notes from the SoCalCOSH meeting of July 22, 2005

Quarterly Meeting Summary

The SoCalCOSH quarterly meeting was a hit! There were about 35 people in attendance. The program started off with Haifa Hughes of Cal/OSHA Consultation, who made a presentation on the Ergonomics Standard. This discussion ended with the fact that this standard (as others) is the basic minimum set for preventing injuries of workers, so it is up to employers and employees to work on a health and safety program to prevent injuries.

Next, several union campaigns focusing on worker health and safety were presented. Hugo Camacho from UNITE-HERE Local 52 gave an overview of the laundry workers campaign. Lupe Luna, a hotel room cleaner and UNITE-HERE Local 11 Steward presented the issues room cleaners face and what they are doing to organize around health and safety issues. Next, UNITE-HERE Local 11 interns, Daniela Condé and Laura Podolsky, presented their research with interviewing workers, highlighting "bingo," an employer sponsored program at several hotels which award workers for months without safety "accidents." The speaker portion concluded with Sheryl Moore from AFSCME Local 3090 speaking about the employer-union health and safety program she is working on with the City of Los Angeles.

Linda Delp of UCLA-LOSH gave an update about pending toxics, heat and noise legislation. Alejandra Domenzain of Sweatshop Watch then introduced the discussion over the issue of the health and safety meeting that turned into an ICE Raid in North Carolina. Members are encouraged to go to the Interfaith Worker Justice page now (click here) and send a message in protest of the immigration bureau's tactics. Click here for SoCalCOSH's letter to Cal/OSHA regarding hte ICE Raid. More information about specific actions to address this issue to come!

We would like to thank the speakers for their participation in the SoCalCOSH meeting!
