Worksafe Activist Network Goals and Objectives
Our goal is to build a network of concerned groups and individuals to promote and monitor occupational safety and health in California.
Our objectives are to promote:
- public education regarding the need for worker protection, control of hazards in the workplace, and the protection of community health and the environment;
- effective workplace injury and illness prevention programs; and
- a comprehensive government program to protect all workers in California, and that will serve as a model for occupational safety and health throughout the nation.
We have four primary functions: training, technical assistance, advocacy and public education.
TRAINING. Our volunteers provide training to unions and other worker organizations, to community groups, to employers and to government.

We also train on how to set up a joint labor-management safety and health program. We refer some requests for training to UC Berkeley's Labor and Occupational Health Program (LOHP) or UCLA's Labor Occupational Safety & Health Program (LOSH). If you would like to find out if someone from Worksafe can do a training program on occupational safety and health issues for your organization, please contact us.
Please also look at the materials available under OSH TOPICS. You can download and distribute training material, but we request that you please credit us (or the author of the material) if you duplicate that material. Finally, to learn about any pending training programs or conferences, check out upcoming events listed in PARTICIPATE in EVENTS & COALITIONS.
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE. Our volunteers provide technical assistance to unions or other worker organizations, to community groups, to employers and to government.
Individuals are welcome to contact us regarding an occupational safety and health concern. We try to respond to all web inquiries. However, we have no paid staff and must rely entirely on our volunteer members.
Please review the other occupational safety and health (OSH) resources listed on this website. These include useful government, labor, university, COSH groups, injured worker groups, activist organizations, technical and professional links, and international organizations websites.
ADVOCACY for better occupational safety and health protection. Our volunteers advocate with respect to legislation, regulations and policy. We are active in developing public policy to better protect the health and safety of California's workers.
As advocates, we keep a close watch on legislation, regulations and policy matters affecting occupational safety and health. We follow occupational safety and health legislation and regulations in California, nationally, and sometimes in other states if such impacts California.
As advocates, we also keep a close watch on Cal/OSHA and attend the Cal/OSHA Advisory Committee meetings. We have a seat on the Cal/OSHA Advisory Committee and try to attend meetings in both northern and southern California. Gail Bateson is the representative from the north and Linda Delp is the representative from the south.
We encourage you to attend these meetings as well. The Cal/OSHA Advisory Committee usually meets around the state the first Thursday of each month at 9:30 a.m. Due to budget constraints, however, the meetings are no longer monthly. Contact Cal/OSHA at (510) 286-7000 to get on their mailing list for actual notice of dates and locations of their meetings. By getting on their mailing list, you will ALSO be mailed the Cal/OSHA Advisory Committee meeting minutes.
PUBLICIZE occupational safety and health issues. We try to publish two newsletters each year. Please contact us if you would like to receive our newsletter. We post our newsletters here. We also try to provide interesting occupational safety and health articles from other sources (other newsletters or articles from other media sources or blogs).
