Worksafe is looking for a Communications Manager to support our mission and help us grow.

Position Description
Our new Communications Manager will develop and implement communications strategies to support our advocacy work, help organize a health and safety activist network to move forward a progressive policy agenda for California workers, and support our fundraising and development. The ideal candidate is a great writer, an organizer at heart, resourceful, well-organized, creative, tech savvy, and has a passion for workers’ rights. This is a full-time position.

About Us
Worksafe is a California-based nonprofit that advocates for the basic right of all workers to a safe and healthy workplace. We advocate for strong worker health and safety laws and effective remedies for injured workers, engage in campaigns with worker organizations and activist networks to eliminate toxic chemical and other workplace hazards, and watchdog government agencies to ensure they are protecting workers.

In addition to advocacy and policy work, we are a support center for California legal aid organizations whose clients face workplace health or safety hazards, suffer injuries, or face retaliation at work for exercising their rights under health and safety laws. We provide legal aid groups with training, technical assistance, and litigation support, improving access to justice for low-wage and immigrant workers, workers most vulnerable to having their rights violated or suffering workplace injuries.


  • Formulate powerful messages about occupational safety and health, and develop media strategies to educate workers, policy makers and the public on those issues;
  • Develop outreach materials targeted to different audiences, including workers and unions, attorneys, occupational and environmental health professionals, and others;
  • Assist in developing and fostering a network of activist organizations with an interest in worker health and safety to advance our policy and communications strategies;
  • Design, write, proofread, and edit publications, web materials and other media;
  • Manage our website and social media content;
  • Compile our monthly newsletter; and
  • Other duties as needed.

Desired Qualifications

  • Superior writing ability;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills;
  • Attention to detail;
  • At least two years of professional experience developing and writing content for print or electronic media in a communications role;
  • Community, union or activist organizing experience, or experience in a role directly supporting such efforts;
  • Demonstrated ability working in web-based, Internet, and social media platforms, including web content management experience using WordPress;
  • Basic web development skills, including HTML and CSS;
  • Graphic design skills;
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent course of study in a relevant field;
  • Familiarity with policy issues in occupational health, labor relations, environmental health, or other related field;
  • Bilingual in a language of one or more California immigrant worker populations;
  • Ability to work as part of a team, independently manage priorities, and manage and complete projects with minimal supervision;
  • Commitment to work with and advocate for low-wage and immigrant workers;
  • Knowledge of basic PC applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint); and
  • Willingness to travel and to work some evenings and occasional weekends.
